Artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionize all NOAA’s mission areas and to amplify the value of NOAA’s environmental data archive for society via public-academic-private partnerships. However, successful and effective AI applications and services require extensive preparation of the input data from its original form. This data preparation causes “invisible technical debt” for users and may even create additional barriers. To reduce the burden of data preparation for data users, NOAA envisions making the environmental data collection AI-ready through stewardship and transformative technologies.

This hands-on session will focus on the AI-readiness matrix based on an early draft developed by OSTP Subcommittee on Open Science and recent work from an ESIP working group. We invite participants to bring open environmental data sets of their choice (or choose from a few pre-selected data sets provided prior to the session) and collaborate with others to assess the AI-readiness level of the selected data sets with supporting tools. The session will also discuss strategies to help participants improve the AI-readiness of their selected data sets. The working session will also collect participants’ feedback on the AI-readiness matrix and how to improve the assessment process.

To ensure a successful session, we welcome AI practitioners, data managers/producers, metadata experts, and software engineers to join the session and mix with others during the hands-on assessment exercise. The session welcomes both in-person and virtual participants.
