2021 NOAA ENVIRONMENTAL DATA MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP

Maximizing the Value of NOAA Data through Investment, Innovation, and Governance

August 16-20, 2021

_____________________________________________________________________________________

NOAA’s Environmental Data Management Committee is proud to host the 11th annual NOAA Environmental Data Management Workshop (EDMW). The workshop will be presented in an entirely virtual format. We are taking advantage of the opportunities that this online format affords, to both encourage broad participation in breakout sessions and to line up high caliber plenary speakers.

There is no registration for any sessions, only for the plenaries. Click here for plenary registration info.

The data management for environmental data workflows once data have been received from observing platforms are reasonably well documented and understood. It is the data handling from the observing platform sensor to the data collections point that is less standardized and is the component of the data workflow that can benefit significantly from optimization. Data integrity considerations should also be factored into this portion of the data lifecycle. Many platform operators have been required to write a unique parser for data delivered by an observing platform. Data parsing is often complex, prone to error, and requires software updates when the platform reporting format is updated. What if we could eliminate any custom development for the parsing of data from observing platforms? It is understandable that there may be cases where this is not possible, but it is not too difficult to grasp the potential benefits if the majority of platform data can be rendered in a parsed format without having to write any custom code.

This session will focus on activities and solutions that strive to reduce the complexity of data handling while improving on rapid data availability to data users. It is targeted to data practitioners and platform and sensor engineers that are the first to work with data, from platform data logger to data acceptance from communication platforms. This session will attempt to understand the scope of this work in NOAA with the goal of an ongoing discussion on data landing optimization.
