Jim Manning has been at NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center for nearly 35 years. After a bachelor's degree in mathematics (UMO) and master’s degree in oceanography (URI), his career has been largely devoted to building low-cost ocean observing systems with the help of commercial fishermen.  Over the last few decades, there is a growing network of individuals who deploy sensors on both fixed and mobile fishing gear as well as drifting platforms off the coast of New England. The data is provided to local ocean modellers to help validate numerical simulations of the ocean circulation.
