NOAA’s Environmental Data Management Committee is proud to host the 11th annual NOAA Environmental Data Management Workshop (EDMW). The workshop will be presented in an entirely virtual format. We are taking advantage of the opportunities that this online format affords, to both encourage broad participation in breakout sessions and to line up high caliber plenary speakers.

Dr. Talya ten Brink is a marine social scientist, the geospatial coordinator for the Greater Atlantic Region, and head of the GARFO GIS Lab. Dr. ten Brink works with regulatory, nonprofit, scientific, and academic communities using her expertise in marine spatial planning, offshore wind, and socio-ecological systems. Dr. ten Brink is co-chair of the NOAA Fisheries GIS Committee, a representative of the NOAA GIS Committee, and a member of two ICES Working Groups.

She leads the GARFO GIS Lab and Program. Recent developments from the Lab include a new GIS Mapping tool (accessible at: https://noaa.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=8844969f9f1f46de97ee4f4b1e3700eb#) and six science communication Storymaps on topics such as climate change impacts, marine mammals, sea turtle rescue, Gloucester fishermen, and the scallop fishery research set-aside program.

Dr. ten Brink has worked many years in marine, coastal, and socio-environmental systems in consulting, academic, non-profit, and government sectors, and received awards for her work. She was a SESYNC Graduate Co-P.I. and Fellow, a C-AIM SURF Fellowship Co-P.I., a Knauss Fellow finalist, and a Rhode Island Sea Grant Fellow. Dr. ten Brink holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island, a Master’s of Science in Urbanism from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, and a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Washington, Seattle.
